Kids and parents who are looking for a safe space to immerse online will be thrilled to learn that The LEGO Group and Epic Games are building their own child-friendly take on the metaverse, a virtual world focused on social connection.

The news came after both companies announced a new long-term partnership to shape the metaverse as we all know it for children and their families. They are aiming to build an interactive and immersive digital experience that kids of all ages can enjoy while also empowering them to become confident creators.

Niels B Christiansen, CEO of The LEGO Group said in a press statement: “Kids enjoy playing in digital and physical worlds and move seamlessly between the two. We believe there is huge potential for them to develop life-long skills such as creativity, collaboration and communication through digital experiences. But we have a responsibility to make them safe, inspiring and beneficial for all. Just as we’ve protected children’s rights to safe physical play for generations, we are committed to doing the same for digital play. We look forward to working with Epic Games to shape this exciting and playful future.”

Tim Sweeney, CEO & Founder, Epic Games further shared: “The LEGO Group has captivated the imagination of children and adults through creative play for nearly a century, and we are excited to come together to build a space in the metaverse that’s fun, entertaining, and made for kids and families.”

By bridging the virtual and physical space, the metaverse is hoping to reshape how people meet, play, work, and interact in an online setting.

With their partnership, both The LEGO Group and Epic Games have agreed to three principles which will ensure the digital spaces they develop deliver engaging play opportunities safely: (1) protect children’s right to play by making safety and wellbeing a priority; (2) safeguard children’s privacy by putting their best interests first; and (3) empower children and adults with tools that give them control over their digital experience.

The LEGO Group and Epic Games will be soon announcing updates and progress regarding the construction of this child-friendly metaverse.
