The song of the season, “Golden,” finds its way up to number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart with a record-breaking 31.7 million official streams, 8.4 million radio airplay audience impressions, and 7,000 sold records at most in the United States from August 1 to 7.

The smash hit is part of the nine original songs of the animated film KPop Demon Hunters, directed by Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans. The film follows the K-pop girl group, HUNTR/X, who are secretly a trio of demon hunters out to save the world by creating a Golden Honmoon through their songs.

“Golden” is performed by EJAE, Audrey Nuna, and REI AMI, the singing voices behind HUNTR/X in the film. The song instantly became viral, becoming the first number one song in the Hot 100 performed by any act with a fictional background, and the first song from an all-woman group of three or more members to top the charts in 24 years.

Other popular tracks from the film include HUNTR/X’s “What It Sounds Like” and “How It’s Done”, and the Saja Boys’ “Your Idol” and “Soda Pop.”

Garnering almost 158.8 million views on Netflix, the film highlights Korean heritage, elements of mythology, demonology, and the K-pop industry.
