Philippine Film Industry Month Honors the Women of Philippine Cinema

Spread the love

This year’s Philippine Film Industry Month (PFIM) shines a light on the critical role that women have played in shaping and transforming Philippine cinema through the years. Organized by the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP), the event showcases programs and events for film-lovers and film professionals alike, all over the country and all throughout September.

PFIM 2025 aims to celebrate female cinema icons from the past, beginning the festivities with an opening ceremony at theRed Carpet Cinemas, Shangri-La Plaza in Mandaluyong City. The event includes a free screening of Ishmael Bernal’s Ikaw ay Akin, starring two legends of Filipino film—“Star for All Seasons” Vilma Santos and the late “Superstar” Nora Aunor.

Other events will continue honoring female talents who have contributed to the history of Philippine cinema, including renowned cinematographer Lee Briones-Meily; the writer and production designer Raquel Villavicencio; actress and director Gina Alajar; director Olivia Lamasa; and producer and writer Malou Santos. Their recognition will be complemented by showing their masterpieces: Tanging Yaman (2000) with cinematography by Lee Briones-Meily; Hihintayin Kita sa Langit (1991) with screenplay by Raquel Villavicencio; Moral (1982) starring Gina Alajar; Madrasta (1996) directed by Olivia Lamasan; and Anak (2000) produced by Malou Santos.

Following the screenings are several industry-wide competitions, seminars, workshops, film showings, and activities including the 8th Sine Kabataan Short Film Festival and Laboratory, the SineKab Masterclass Sessions in collaboration with Netflix, Films for Peace, PFIM Gala Night, Film Industry Conference, FDXP X DGPI Film Pitch, FDCP-PFA x MFI x SOFIA: Film Archiving Seminar, and many more.

The FDCP will also represent the country for the Toronto International Film Festival and the Busan International Film Festival to showcase local films, develop international partnerships, and position Philippine cinema as an influential voice globally.

To cap things off, Philippine Film Industry Month will have a public closing ceremony with special guests Mr. Fu, River Joseph, Esnyr, Will Ashley, and Michael Sager on September 27 at Robinsons Manila. This coincides with the launch of the JuanFlix mobile app—an affordable streaming platform that aims to bring Filipino films closer to the community as an advocacy for the inclusive film industry in the country.
