Unpredictable weather has many downsides, one of which is washing your laundry but not being able to dry them due to the weather. This problem was the main focus of John Daeniele Satsatin’s web application, “Maglalaba Ba?”
A fourth-year BS Computer Science student at Cavite State University, Satsatin was inspired when he was told to keep his laundry under a shed due to the brewing rain. Experiencing the hassle of not being able to properly dry his clothes firsthand, he focused on creating an app that would make it easier to understand when would be the best time to do laundry, skipping difficult visuals and data for a clearer picture of when it would be best to do the chore.
Fed with real-time weather information from Open-Meteo, the support of OpenWeatherMap, and the geo-location of the user, Maglalaba Ba combines different datapoints to provide a simple answer on what should be the optimal time to start doing the laundry.
In an interview with Philstar Life, Satsatin explained that he considered weather forecasts, humidity, and temperature to help make decisions about what to tell the user. With higher humidity, clothes dried more slowly, and with hotter temperatures, clothes dried more quickly. In addition, pouring rain will increase humidity, making it hard to do the laundry. Factoring all these in, Satsatin came up with the easiest way to put his app to use—with a simple illustration and a one-sentence description explaining when it would be best to do the laundry.
Maglalaba Ba is an example of how technology, passion, and the right catalyst can help solve a simple problem. And by distilling technical terminologies into simple, reader-friendly one-liners, the app ensures that even those who have a hard time understanding complicated formats can easily find out if they should do their laundry or not.
