Fuiyoh, we’re finally going to see the internet’s favorite uncle in a cartoon! Malaysian comedian Nigel Ng, the man behind Uncle Roger, announced that his internet persona is getting an animated series.
Uncle Roger rose to fame when he first criticized a BBC video for how they cooked fried rice. Since then, Uncle Roger has become a household name, with Ng doing comedy shows, collaborating with Gordon Ramsey, Guga, Joshua Weissman, and even other Southeast Asian cooks. He also opened a restaurant in his hometown, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
In a post last October 22, Ng revealed that he is collaborating with animation studio Toonstar to bring his persona to life in an animated series entitled Fried. The series will expand on the history and lore of Uncle Roger, before he became the man we all know and love. This includes a deep dive into his previous relationship with Auntie Helen, another fictional character he often talks about in his videos.
“We’re busy developing the universe: creating the art style, writing the scripts, coming up with the characters, casting voice actors, etc. The story will revolve around Uncle Roger before he went viral on the internet. The job he used to have, the friends (and enemies) he made, and of course, his love interest at the time – Helen. He was the same curmudgeonly uncle as he is now, but instead of making videos on YouTube, he runs a stall in a rundown local mall food court,“ Ng said in his announcement.
Ng also mentioned that there will be a teaser about Fried later this year on his YouTube page.
