On August 9 every year, the whole country of Singapore celebrates their independence. This day is always met with grand festivities, including the annual National Day Parade which began in 1966. But with the pandemic going on, celebrations have of course been scaled down to avoid large crowds.
But don’t worry – if you are looking for other ways to celebrate SG Pride, we have exciting news for you as Netflix has announced that they will be releasing over a hundred Singapore-made films and series this August, just in time for National Day!

Through partnerships with local studios, Netflix was able to create an impressive roster of titles that includes many of Singapore’s highest grossing and critically acclaimed films as well as nostalgic movies and shows. Most of the titles will be released in early August – in fact you can already watch some of them now – but the streaming platform will keep releasing titles until October. Most of these titles will also be available to stream in Singapore’s neighboring countries in the Southeast Asian region.
In a statement, the DIrector of the Singapore Film Commission Joachim Ng, shared, “The bringing together of Singapore stories and featuring them on Netflix’s global OTT platform is a great way to applaud our Singaporean creators and content. Launching this during our 55th National Day is a wonderful birthday present to the nation. I hope that these stories continue to encourage and comfort Singaporeans everywhere in the world, amidst these extraordinary times.”
Some of the most anticipated titles include Ilo Ilo, which was the first Singaporean film to win an award at the Cannes Film Festival in 2013, and Growing Up, a Singaporean drama series that aired from 1996-2001. The popular comedy film franchise Ah Boys to Men and the influential satirical comedy film I Not Stupid are also included in the list.
