Spread the love

Sony has declared that recent rumors surrounding Spider-Man 3, particularly the casting of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield to join Tom Holland, as false.

This is in response to recent reports that suggests that both Maguire, who played Spidey in Sam Raimi’s live-action trilogy, and Garfield, who starred in The Amazing Spider-Man movies, were set to return for the currently untitled Spider-Man 3.

Despite the countless posters that look very legitimate that have been circulating around social media, it seems that the old wall crawlers that we’ve come to love will not be joining the newest member of the spider family.

A representative for the studio released a brief statement on the matter: “Those rumored castings are not confirmed.”

So, for now, our two previous live-action versions of the beloved Marvel Comics superhero are not getting ready to suit back up in an official capacity. This is not to say that it couldn’t happen down the line. And it may still happen in the upcoming sequel. It’s just that the actors have not officially signed on for the project. But that does not completely dismiss the fact we may be getting 3 Spider-Men that we already know in one big blockbuster. Chances are that they may be keeping it under wraps and will sign them on at a later date seeing as the release date for the upcoming Spider-Man with Tom Holland is set for late 2021. Seeing the original Spider-Man Tobey Maguire with his successor Andrew Garfield alongside the most recent Tom Holland is a dream come true for fans of the web-slinger, yet there is still hope.

But regardless, should the two former heroes who dawned the red and blue suit not be in the latest flick, this gives room for new versions of Spider-Man from different universes to enter the MCU. As thrilling as seeing former spiders in the newest Spider-Man film is, it would be equally amazing to see newer editions of the hero such as Miles Morales, a black Spider-Man who can turn invisible. Who’s to say that we won’t see an Asian, Hispanic, or even a female Spider-Man (or Woman) dawn the web-clad arsenal of red and blue crimefighters?

For now, Garfield and Maguire are not officially signed on for Spider-Man 3 with Tom Holland, but there is so much more to look forward to. Sinister Six with John Cena? The return of the Vulture played by THE Michael Keaton? The mysterious Doctor Strange alongside Tom Holland’s Spider-Man? These are more than enough to tickle our little Spider-Man heads.

So let’s keep our hopes up for a seat-gripping ride for Spider-Man 3. Maybe the studios will listen to our clamor for a live-action Spider-verse movie and actually put it in their next movie.
