Three films from Southeast Asia have been announced will be part of this year’s Sundance Film Festival.
Baz Poopiriya’s One for the Road of Thailand (co-produced by China and Hong Kong), Pham Ngoc Lan’s The Unseen River of Thailand, and Sonny Calvento’s Excuse Me, Miss, Miss, Miss of the Philippines are heading to the US film festival known for premiering bold and distinct voices in cinema.
The films are selected from the 14,092 submissions sent for this year’s Sundance, which is now introducing a new online platform for virtual screenings.

One for the Road
One for the Road competes for the World Cinema Dramatic Competition and follows a bar owner who gets the surprise from an estranged friend who has returned home to Thailand. Acclaimed filmmaker Wong Kar Wai produces.

The Unseen River
The Unseen River compiles stories told along the river: a woman reunites with her ex-lover at a hydroelectric plant; meanwhile, a young man travels downstream to a temple in search of a cure for his insomnia.

Excuse Me, Miss, Miss, Miss
And finally, Excuse Me, Miss, Miss, Miss tells the journey of a contractual sales lady in uncovering the ultimate jaw-dropping secret to regularization. It is the first Filipino film that will be part of Sundance Film Festival.
The latter two films are part of the International Fiction Shorts section.
Apart from online screening, Sundance Film Festival will be featuring new screening plans including drive-ins, screenings at independent arthouses around the country, and more.
