The Queen’s Gambit, this year’s Golden Globe winner for Best Television Limited Series, is being reported to be adapted into a musical.

Based on the 1983 novel of the same name by Walter Tevis, the Netflix show have recently won acclaims and record-breaking streams for the platform. Given the series’ popularity, Level Forward eventually acquired the theatrical rights of the novel to adapt chess player Beth Harmon’s story to the stage.

Level Forward CEO Adrienne Becker and producer Julia Dunetz shared in a statement, “It is a privilege for Level Forward to lead the charge of bringing The Queen’s Gambit to the stage through the beloved and enduring craft of musical theater. Told through a brave and fresh point of view, audiences are already sharing in the friendship and fortitude of the story’s inspiring women who energize and sustain Beth Harmon’s journey and ultimate triumph. The story is a siren call amidst our contemporary struggles for gender and racial equity, and we’re looking forward to moving the project forward.”

The Queen’s Gambit is set in a 1950s orphanage where a young girl reveals an astonishing talent for chess and begins an unlikely journey to stardom while grappling with addiction.
