Have you ever wondered how the Marvel universe would’ve turned out if the characters swapped roles or made different choices? This upcoming animated series from Marvel Studios shows us just that.
Directed by Bryan Andrew, and written by Ashley Bradley, Marvel Studios’ What If…? reimagines the Marvel universe and shows us endless possibilities as it places characters we know and love in new roles that we may not have expected like T’Challa operating as Star Lord, Peggy Carter taking the Super Soldier Serum instead of Steve Rogers, and Natasha Romanoff never joining Shield.
Although What If…? is animated, the stories and events of the series revolve around the Infinity Saga (the first 23 films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe), with stars from the MCU returning to voice their respective characters such as the late Chadwick Boseman as Black Panther, Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Hayley Atwell as Peggy Carter, and many more.
“Kevin [Feige] said that we will be exploring every movie in a new way, but not every episode is about one movie if that makes sense,” showrunner Ashley Bradley said in an interview with Discussing Film. “On the reel [shown at D23 Expo], there is this image of a Star-Lord T’Challa because we wanted to see what if the worlds of Black Panther and the Guardians of the Galaxy collided? That was taking two universes, two to three movies, kind of twisting them in new ways,” Bradley added.
The first season of Marvel Studios’ What If…? will consist of ten episodes, and will be released through Disney+ in the summer of 2021. Watch the exclusive first look of What If…? below and let us know what you’re looking to the most in the new series.
