The years 2020 and 2021 were historical in more ways than one, and the 93rd Academy Awards is no exception. Marking many firsts for women and people of color, the 2021 Oscars showcased the diversity of the film industry that critics and the general public have been calling for since #OscarsSoWhite six years ago.

With Chloe Zhao’s win for Nomadland, she stands as the first Asian woman to win Best Director in the history of the awards ceremony. Winning Best Makeup and Hairstyling are Mia Neal and Jamika Wilson, part of the hair and makeup team of Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, making history as the first black women to be nominated and to win that award.
