Which team could better off write a bad romance other than the infamous couple from the DC universe themselves – the Joker and Harley Quinn? Apparently, the sequel for the Joker (2019) movie might be a musical, and Lady Gaga is in early talks alongside Joaquin Phoenix to play the tandem.
The speculations started when Todd Philipps, director of Joker (2019), posted a photo on Instagram in what appears to be the script of the sequel entitled “Joker: Folie à deux” – with Joaquin Phoenix reading its pages.
The term Folie à Deux refers to a shared delusional disorder – its literal translation is “shared madness” – and well, there’s really no one else Joker partnered up in crime and madness with other than Harley Quinn herself.
Both coming from Oscar-winning projects, high expectations are up with Lady Gaga and Joaquin Phoenix as they appear on the big screen together. However, everything is still up in the air as Warner Bros. has not yet finalized a deal with the two stars, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Although details on Gaga’s character are still being kept in secret, she would likely play Harley Quinn, one that is different from Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn as this new character exists in a different DC universe.
Gaga worked with Philipps in his capacity as one of the producers of A Star Is Born (2018), alongside Bradley Cooper who was also a producer on Joker (2019).
The potential of the sequel being a musical is a bold approach from Philipps as the first movie was moody, dark, and deliberately avoiding the action beats of a typical superhero film – which also became a massive global blockbuster as it grossed over $1 billion worldwide and won two out of 11 Oscar nominations.
Joker and Harley Quinn are known for their abusive on-off relationship, making the pair considered as one of the most dysfunctional and most popular couples in comic history. Hopes are up for the portrayal of Gaga and Phoenix as the tandem – to see how they differ from Robbie and Leto’s artistic impression of the two.
