Marvel Studios bares new movies and series at D23 Expo

Time to gear-up, MCU fans! Marvel Studios unveiled a variety of exciting film, television, and casting during the MCU panel at the D23 Expo in Anaheim, California.

Kevin Feige, head of Marvel Studios started his bit with a surprise rendition of “I Can Do This All Day” a performed by the cast of the fictional Rogers: The Musical, featuring a trailer for Disney+’s Werewolf By Night special starring Gael Garca Bernal, and it also revealed the official lineup of heroes that will star in the 2024 film The Thunderbolts.

Here are all the things to marvel at from the D23 MCU panel:

Werewolf By Night

The first official trailer for Marvel’s frightening special Werewolf By Night will have you shivering with excitement. The picture, shot entirely in black and white, is reminiscent of “The Twilight Zone” and old monster movies from the 1930s and 1940s. Early footage revealed at the D23 Expo hints that the film would follow a group of monster hunters as they search for a monster among them. Gael Garcia Bernal and Laura Donelly will star in the special Halloween feature that will be up on Disney+ on Oct. 7.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever

The director of “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” Ryan Coogler, released footage from the film, which will be out in theaters on November 11. Following T’Challa’s death, Queen Ramonda chastised the United Nations for attempting to steal vibranium from Wakanda.

The clip showed the Dora Milaje’s strength and laid the scenario for an epic battle against Namor and the Atlanteans.

“Excited for you to walk out of the cinema and feel proud of what we brought to you,” said Letitia Wright, who plays Shuri in the film.

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania

Paul Rudd, Evangeline Lilly, and Johnathan Majors took the stage to talk about the upcoming “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania,” the first film in the MCU’s phase 5.

“This is going to be unlike anything you’ve seen from us and not to mention that guy,” Rudd said, pointing to Majors, who plays Kang. “Throws this whole thing into such new territory.”

Lang, Van Dyne, and Pym families are shown being drawn into the quantum realm and confronted with a terrifying new foe: Kang the Conqueror.

Secret Invasion

So much for enjoying his vacation off-world: in the official teaser for Secret Invasion, Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) is back on Earth and ready to take on the Skrulls… at least, we believe it is him. Fury is seen meeting with a group of other characters in the show’s official trailer, including Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders), Everett K. Ross (Martin Freeman), the Skrull Talos (Ben Mendelsohn), and James “Rhodey” Rhodes (Don Cheadle), a.k.a. War Machine. The series, which will premiere on Disney+ in 2023, also features debuts Olivia Colman, Emilia Clarke, and Kingsley Ben-Adir as its major nemesis.

 

Don Cheadle will star in Armor Wars

Anotha’ one for Cheadle. In addition to Secret Invasion, Marvel has confirmed that the actor will also be in the upcoming Disney+ series Armor Wars, as well as unveiling its new logo. A release date has not been set.

Echo

Echo,” a new Disney+ drama about a deaf female heroine that takes place after “Hawkeye,” makes extensive use of American Sign Language. Footage from the series shows Vincent D’Onofrio reprising his role as King Pin. Alaqua Cox returns as the title character.

Daredevil: Born Again

D’Onofrio, who was on stage promoting “Echo,” was joined by Charlie Cox to present footage of Matthew Murdock aka Daredevil in “She-Hulk.” No footage from the show was displayed because filming has not yet begun, but D’Onofrio will definitely be in the series.

Anthony Ramos joins the cast of Ironheart

Though widely suspected online, Anthony Ramos is officially confirmed to play Parker Robbins, a.k.a. the mystical supervillain The Hood, in Ironheart video unveiled at D23, according to IGN. Ramos, who was there at the event, joins Dominique Thorne, Manny Montana, Shea Couleé, and Alden Ehrenreich in the show’s star-studded roster. The show is presently scheduled to premiere in 2023.

Ke Huy Quan joins the cast of Loki

Ke Huy Quan (Everything, Everywhere, All at Once) is ready for more fun in the multiverse. When Loki season 2 premieres on Disney+ in summer 2023, the 80’s child star from The Goonies and Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom will join as an employee of the Time Variance Authority.

Matt Shakman will direct Fantastic Four

Matt Shakman, the director of WandaVision, will return to helm Marvel’s highly anticipated Fantastic Four reboot, which will start off Phase 6 of the Multiverse Saga on November 8, 2024.

Shira Haas and Tim Blake Nelson have joined Captain America: New World Order

In “Captain America: New World Order,” Anthony Mackie reprises his role as Captain America, accompanied on stage by Danny Ramiez as Joaquin Torres, Carl Lumbly as Isaiah Bradley, and Tim Blacke Nelson as Samuel Sterns, aka the Leader—last seen in 2008’s The Incredible Hulk. The film will hit theaters May 3, 2024.

Thunderbolts cast revealed

Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige revealed the wonderfully lethal cast of The Thunderbolts: Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, David Harbour as Red Guardian, Hannah John-Kamen as Ghost, Olga Kurylenko as Task Master, and Wyatt Russel as John Walker aka U.S. Agent, Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova and Sebastian Stan as the Winter Soldier.

Stan said during the event that the assembled group “look like a good, troubled bunch and Bucky knows a thing about that.” While Feige joked, “It tells you a lot about the team when beloved Winter Soldier is the most stable among them.”

Thunderbolts will be released on July 26, 2024.

The Marvels

Brie Larson, Iman Vellani, and Teyonah Parris wrapped up the session with new footage from the film. Miss Marvel, Captain Monica Rambeau, and Captain Marvel discover that their powers have been entwined, and the three heroes must separate themselves. Meanwhile, the three continue to switch places unintentionally, resulting in quite some laughter.

The Marvel announcements were not the only news to come out of D23. The biggest Star Wars news, as well as all of the future Disney and Pixar movies and shows, were showcased.
