We Filipinos are known worldwide for various reasons.
To name a few, we are a powerhouse in the pageant world. We are champions in the field of sports. We have some of the most beautiful tourist spots in the world and the talent our kababayans have shown has wowed the international audience numerous times. But recently, we’ve been making waves globally for another reason, our amazing cuisine.
According to TasteAtlas, an online guide for dishes, authentic recipes, and excellent restaurants worldwide, our very own Kare-Kare ranked 50th amongst the best rated stews in the entire world. The dish beat out popular well-known stews like couscous from Morocco and gumbo from the United States.
Kare-Kare is made up of a thick savory peanut sauce and usually has oxtail, beef tripe, and various cuts and parts of pork or beef. The local favorite stew is served mostly during celebrations or occasions. Its history is also as diverse as the different ways the stew can be made. There is no single verified story on where it really originated. Some suggest it came from the province of Pampanga while others say that it came from Indian soldiers who settled in the Philippines during British Invasion. But regardless of its origin, there’s no denying how delicious and important this dish is for us Filipinos and now, even for the world.
But Kare-Kare isn’t the only dish to receive international recognition recently.
The popular Pinoy Dinuguan and the Bicolano stew Pinangat were amongst the 100 most popular stews in the world according to TasteAtlas as well, ranking 100th and 68th respectively.
They now join Adobo and Sinigang as some of the most popular Filipino dishes that are known globally.
It’s high time that Pinoy dishes aren’t just enjoyed and recognized in our own households but globally as well. The world should be ready as they are going to taste the delicious meals from the kitchens of Filipinos.
