The year 2022 witnessed the comeback of cinema in full force after a long hiatus, while streaming services upped their game in producing great series. As we enter another year, SEA Wave took the time to reflect on the best of the best content released last year.

Take a look at our High Five Movies and Series of 2022.

SEA Wave’s High Five Series of the Year

5. Heartstopper, Season 1

The Netflix series adapted from the graphic novels by Alice Oseman deserves a spot in the top 5 for its contribution to queer representation in the media. It portrays the LGBTQ+ community in a heartfelt way, realistically showing the various struggles of queer teens while also perfectly capturing the essence of young love. Heartstopper is an adorable series that will give you nothing but pure happiness and will no doubt make you smile nonstop from ear to ear. Plus, it has an amazing soundtrack that you can listen to if you find yourself unable to move on.

4. Severance, Season 1

This newcomer from Apple TV+ has a unique and interesting premise that was, fortunately, perfectly executed. It is set in a world where employees of a company can choose to undergo an operation called “severance” which separates their work memories from their regular life memories. Its characters and story were well-developed and the shocking twist at the end is definitely worth the wait.

3. The Boys, Season 3

Amazon Prime Video’s The Boys has been known for its gore and black comedy that continues to test the limits of television. Centered around commercialized and morally gray superheroes, its latest season keeps up its mind blowing narrative and bloody scenes but doesn’t forget to keep its equally interesting characters at its center. The Boys is definitely not for the faint of heart but it is a rewarding series to watch and follow.

2. House of the Dragon, Season 1

After much anticipation, the HBO prequel to Game of Thrones did not disappoint. The series follows a new set of characters almost 200 years before the events of the original series. Some may have been confused with the pacing in the first few episodes, but the complex Targaryen family story is filled with intrigue and drama that made us anxiously wait for every weekly episode. The series also gave us many complex and interesting characters to root for and hate. The first season excellently set up the Targaryen war of succession known as the Dance of the Dragons and fans are already eagerly waiting for the next season.

1. The White Lotus, Season 2

The second season of the HBO black comedy-drama anthology takes the number one spot in our best series list of 2022. Similar to its Hawaii season in 2021, the second season revolves around a group of guests in the White Lotus hotel, this time set in the hotel’s Sicily branch, and the death of an unknown character shown in the series’ opening scene. The tension and intrigue among its morally gray characters will keep you glued to your seats and the mystery unfolds itself in a chaotic and entertaining way.

5. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever

The sequel to the box office success was tough to watch without Chadwick Boseman, but it was a perfect and loving tribute to the late actor. The film focused on themes of grief and loss and the cast was able to pull off great performances, including newcomer Tenoch Huerta Mejía as Namor.

4. Turning Red

Pixar is known to create adorable animation with a touching story that can be enjoyed by children and adults alike. Its 2022 film Turning Red features a Chinese-Canadian teenager who discovers that she has inherited a curse that turns her into a giant red panda when feeling strong emotions. The story was successful in portraying complicated family relationships and generational trauma in a sensitive and heartfelt way. Moreover, it is one of, if not the first animated movie to unapologetically show the chaotic and messy struggles widely experienced by teenage girls, making it a realistic and relatable coming-of-age film.

3. Triangle of Sadness

The Palme d’Or winning satirical black comedy film was deserving of the title for its no-holds barred portrayal of the insanely rich. Divided into three parts, the movie is a commentary on social structures and influencer culture among others, and the gradual descent into chaos of the characters and storyline was highly entertaining to watch. The actors all gave great performances, including Filipino actress Dolly De Leon and the late Charlbi Dean. But beware: we do not recommend watching the second part while eating.

2. The Batman

Robert Pattinson starring in the Batman reboot drew a lot of controversy especially with long-time fans of the comics and character, but Pattinson quickly silenced those doubts. His turn as the iconic vigilante focused on the character’s detective side with a more gritty and darker tone from previous films. Aside from Pattinson, Zoë Kravitz and Paul Dano as Catwoman and Riddler respectively also delivered a superb performance that leaves a mark long after you watch the film.

1. Everything, Everywhere, All at Once

The A24-produced film tops our 2022 best movies list for many reasons. Its stunt choreography that takes inspiration from kung fu is something we haven’t seen in a while – we can’t remember the last time we enjoyed ourselves watching hand to hand combat in movies. The concept of the movie itself was so absurd yet worked very well on screen thanks as well to its smart writing and direction. Overall, it is just a masterfully done piece of art with a message of unconditional love and kindness at its core delivered in an incredibly imaginative way.
