It’s going to be a great 1st quarter kick-off for Filipino theater fans as the beloved musical The Sound of Music will be arriving in Manila this March 2023.
GMG Productions recently announced that the much-loved musical will take place at the Samsung Performing Arts Theater in Circuit, Makati from March 7 to 26, 2023.
The Sound of Music by Rodgers & Hammerstein will embark on a multi-year international tour in Singapore in 2022, according to Broadway International Group. Philippines, India, Malaysia, China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and additional countries that have not yet been revealed will all be visited for longer than a week throughout the tour. Simone Genatt and Marc Routh, co-founders and producers of Broadway International Group, have collaborated on numerous foreign productions in the Philippines, including Cinderella starring Lea Salonga.
“It is a great privilege to bring this cherished Rodgers & Hammerstein musical to Manila, particularly at this time of global recovery,” Genatt and Routh, said in a joint statement.
“We are thrilled to light the Broadway musical torch once again in Manila, and to perform this fantastic production in The Philippines,” they added.
The lead performers for the next tour are Jill Christine-Wiley as Maria Rainer, Trevor Martin as Captain von Trapp, Daniel Fullerton as Rolf, Lauren Kidwell as Mother Abbess, Joshua La Force as Max, Lauren O’Brien as Liesl, and Annie Sherman as Elsa. Along with Dayne Joyner, Cassi Mikat, Marissa O’Donnell, Caitlin Ort, Sabina Petra, Robert Rice, Julia Salatti, Cassidy Sledge, and Sean Thompson.
The company also includes Alli Atkenson, Corey Bryant, Patrick Cogan, Julia Anne Cohen, Sydney DeMaria, Maddie Eaton, Keaton Eckhoff, Corey Greenan, and Alli Atkenson.
The Trapp Family Singers by Maria Augusta Trapp served as the inspiration for the music of The Sound of Music, which was composed by Richard Rodgers, with lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II, and a book by Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse.
Danny Mefford is the tour’s Broadway choreographer, while Andy Einhorn is the musical director. The tour is directed by Tony Award–winning director Jack O’Brien.
Maria, who is assigned the job of serving as Captain von Trapp’s children’s governess, is the focus of the narrative. The seven children were raised in a strict home, but when Maria introduced music to them, their lives vibrant once more.
“The Sound of Music” which will mark its 65th anniversary in 2024, made its Broadway debut in 1959 and won five Tony Awards, including Best Musical.
The Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer-led 1965 classic film adaptation of the play received five Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director for Robert Wise.
