After Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s announcement of a remake last April, Disney fans have been cautiously waiting for its release announcement. And finally, the actor who played the legendary demigod “Maui” has once again sparked hope to Disney fans as he finally revealed the upcoming remake’s release date: June 27, 2025.

The remake will be directed by Thomas Kail, best known for his work on Hamilton. Prior to this announcement, Johnson who had promised his return as “Maui” also announced that he will also be executive producing the film along with the voice of Moana actress, Auli’i Cravalho. Cravalho however will not reprise her lead role as the free-spirited and courageous Moana.
“I am truly honored to pass this baton to the next young woman of Pacific Island descent, to honor our incredible Pacific peoples, cultures and communities that helped inspire her story,” Cravalho said. “And I look forward to all the beautiful Pacific representation to come.”
What to expect in the remake?
In the remake, the film will highlight the Pacific Island Culture through its surrounding islands, communities and traditions seen through a young woman who takes on a journey of self-discovery while reconnecting with her ancestors.
While other signature aspects of the original film are also set to return in the remake including the phenomenal Polynesian music and dance, the Goddess Te Fiti, Pua the pig and more.
A few voice actors from the 2016 film are also returning such as Temuera Morrison (Chief Tui), Nicole Scherzinger (Sina), Rachel House (Gramma Tala) and Alan Tudyk (Hei Hei the rooster). Though, there is still no announcement of who will act the role of the Disney princess.
There has been no official announcement yet if the film will be released in the theaters or will be streaming in Disney+ as it was confirmed that it was still in early development. But nevertheless, our hopes are high to watch Moana and Maui’s journey come to life!
