K-pop groups SEVENTEEN, NewJeans, and BTS were honored with the grand awards during the recently held Mnet Asia Music Awards (MAMA) 2023 ceremony at the Tokyo Dome in Japan.
MAMA is a music awarding ceremony presented by CJ ENM Entertainment Division, a mass media division of South Korean entertainment and retail company CJ ENM. Taking inspiration from the MTV Music Video Awards (VMAs), the MAMAs have four main awards called “Daesang” for Artist of the Year, Song of the Year, Album of the Year, and Worldwide Icon of the Year.
This year, the 13-member boy group SEVENTEEN bagged the Album of the Year award for their 10th mini-album, FML. The group also earned awards for Best Dance Performance (Male Group) for their song “Super,” Worldwide Fans’ Choice Top 10, Best Male Group, and a special award for Culture and Style. This makes SEVENTEEN the most awarded group of the year with a total of five wins.
Meanwhile recently debuted girl group NewJeans were awarded two major awards – Artist of the Year and Song of the Year for “Ditto.” The 5-member group also won Best Dance Performance (Female Group) for “Ditto” and Best Female Group overall. This gives NewJeans a total of 4 awards from MAMA 2023, just a year after their debut in the industry.
The last major award was given to the internationally acclaimed boy group, BTS, who received the Worldwide Icon of the Year Award along with Best Original Soundtrack for their song “The Planet,” and the Worldwide Fans’ Choice Top 10, earning a total of three awards for the group.
BTS members also received individual recognition with Jimin winning Best Male Artist, Jungkook winning Best Dance Performance (Male Solo) and Best Collaboration for “Seven” featuring Latto, and Agust D (Suga) winning Best Rap & HipHop Performance for “People Pt. 2.”
Notable multiple award recipients include Jisoo who won Best Female Artist, Best Dance Performance (Female Solo) and Best Music Video for her solo debut song “Flower”, and ZEROBASEONE who won Favorite New Artist, Best New Male Artist, and Worldwide Fan’s Choice Top 10.
Many other fan favorites were awarded during the ceremony including musician duo AKMU who won Best Vocal Performance (Group), Park Jae-Jung who won Best Vocal Performance (Solo), boy group RIIZE who won Favorite New Artist alongside ZEROBASEONE, and many more.
