The 2024 New York Festivals (NYF) have recently announced the winners for their annual TV & Film Awards in a Virtual Storytellers Gala this April. With hundreds of entries from all over the world, Singapore, Malaysia and the Philippines have made Southeast Asia proud by bringing home 28 trophies and 53 finalist citations for their exceptional and innovative contributions to television and film.
Claiming the lion’s share for the Lion City, Singapore triumphed with 67 accolades including 7 gold, 7 silver, and 10 bronze awards for brands such as Netflix, BeIN Sports Asia, Mediacorp, Curiosity Stream, YouTube, Facebook and Grand Hyatt Singapore. They also achieved 43 finalist honors for different documentary, drama, and current affairs programs.
Singapore’s national media network, Mediacorp, brought in 57 total awards, with Channel News Asia’s (CNA) documentaries coming out on top for various categories: The Exiles won a gold award in the Documentary – History & Society category for sharing untold stories of love and demise of deported men during post-war UK and Australia; The Last Defenders of India won a gold award in the Documentary – Social Justice category for showing how endangered wildlife is poached in the Asian forests and seas; Undercover Asia won a gold award in the Documentary – Health/Medical Information category for its “Tainted Medicine Scandal” episode exploring the most notorious medicine scandals in the region; Reaching the Unreached: The Doctor For The Nomads won a gold award in the Craft Program – Direction category for its focus on healthcare inequality in Asia; and After Dark Season 2 – Skin Deep won a gold award in the Craft Program – Special Visual Effects category for their practical and special effects work in the horror anthology series.
Meanwhile, the Philippines bagged 9 accolades including 1 gold, 2 silver, 4 bronze awards, and 2 finalist honors for broadcaster GMA Network and streaming platform Viu.
GMA Network won multiple awards with all its shortlisted entries winning in their respective categories: multi-awarded documentary program The Atom Araullo Specials won a gold award in the Documentary – Social Justice category for “Child’s Game” which focused on children in conflict with the law and a silver award in the Documentary – Human Concerns category for “One Deep Breath” which looked into an indigenous group who dove for pearls in the sea for a living. Other winners and finalists include GMA Network’s I-witness documentary specials “The Price of Dreams,” “Boat to School,” and “Rise from the Mud,” and action-drama series Black Rider, as well as Viu Original series K-Love which follows five friends and their love for K-dramas.
Malaysia won a total of 4 accolades, including 2 bronze awards and 2 finalist honors for Al Jazeera’s documentary program 101 East. “Mining the Pacific Ocean” won a bronze award in the Documentary – Environment & Ecology category and a finalist citation in the Documentary – Climate Change & Sustainability category for investigating how the Pacific Ocean could be mined to power green energy for the future; “Monkey Business” won a bronze medal in the Documentary – Health/Medical Information category for its deep dive into animal cruelty in primate testing; and “Leaving Afghanistan” won a finalist citation in the Documentary – International Affairs category which follows the mass exodus of Afghan civilians after the return of the Taliban. The Al Jazeera English channel was also named the 2024 Broadcaster of the Year, which they have won for the 8th consecutive year in a row for their outstanding news and programs.
The NYF TV & Film Awards is held annually recognizing content from over 50 countries with all content screened and judged by the New York Festivals Grand Jury of more than 200 creative media professionals.
