In the world of comics, there is no hero more recognizable than Superman himself. And now, almost 86 years after his first comic appearance, the iconic character synonymous with the word “superhero” is getting a brand new movie.
Since the announcement that James Gunn (director of Guardians of the Galaxy and The Suicide Squad) would be the writer and director for the new Superman movie, the hype for the production has been unparalleled. To help you prepare for the new film, here’s everything you need to know about Superman (2025).
The Plot
DC Studios co-CEO and Executive Producer Peter Safran confirmed that the new Superman movie will not be an origin story, but will instead feature a young Clark Kent, who is already employed at the Daily Planet, as he reconciles his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing.
Fans of the movie can also expect a Superman that’s more accurate to the comics, with Gunn and Safran putting a heavy emphasis on the values that makes the character so great. In an interview, Safran described this new Superman as “the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way. He is kindness in a world that thinks of kindness as old-fashioned.”
James Gunn also revealed that the new Superman movie will take inspiration from several iconic Superman storylines from the comics, with Grant Morrision and Frank Quietly’s All-Star Superman in particular, being a key influence for the movie.
The Costume
James Gunn recently provided a first look at the costume that David Corenswet will be wearing for the new movie. Aside from the ominous laser orb that’s in the background, this first glimpse has also heightened anticipation for the film, with fans eagerly speculating what the design choices in the new costume might reveal about the movie’s direction.
As noted by several fans, the new suit contains elements from both past and modern designs of the Man of Steel, with the costume’s modern look echoing Superman’s design during DC Comics’ New 52 run, the crest on his chest being a modern redesign of the “Kingdom Come” logo, and we can also see the return of Superman’s iconic outside underpants, an element that was noticeably absent from the character’s previous movie appearance.
An All-star cast for an All-new Superman
One of the more exciting aspects of the new movie is it’s ensemble cast featuring David Corenswet as Superman/Clark Kent, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, and Wendell Pierce as Perry White for the Metropolis pack.
The appearances of Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner/Green Lantern, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Isabel Merced as Hawkgirl, and Anthony Corrigan as Metamorpho could also hint at a portrayal of a different version of the Justice League. Additionally, Milly Alcock is also set to appear in the film as Kara Zor-El, Superman’s long-lost cousin.
The Man of Reboots
Upon their arrival as the new heads of DC Studios, James Gunn and Peter Safran made a decision to wipe the slate clean and start fresh with DC’s superhero movies. With Gunn confirming that 2023’s “The Flash” would reset the continuity, it essentially marked the end of the DC Extended Universe.
David Corenswet’s upcoming Superman movie will be the third cinematic reboot for the iconic character in the past 18 years and will also be the first movie in the DC Universe’s Chapter One: Gods and Monsters, the new title for James Gunn and Peter Safran’s reboot of DC’s film continuity.
However, other DC movies and TV shows during this time such as Pattinson’s The Batman, John Cena’s Peacemaker, and Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker will not be part of DCU’s continuity, and will be labeled as “DC Elseworlds” or alternate universe stories.
When Does It Release?
Amidst the swirling speculation surrounding the highly anticipated new Superman movie, one detail is certain: Superman is set to soar into theaters on July 11, 2025.
With excitement and optimism building over David Corenswet’s debut as the iconic superhero and James Gunn’s vision for the film, this release date promises a blockbuster event that fans won’t want to miss.
