The Sine Kabataan Short Film Festival, hosted by the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP), made its annual return this September to mark Philippine Film Industry Month (PFIM). The festival featured locally-made original short films, amplifying the voices of young Filipino filmmakers as they showcase their stories on the big screen.

This year’s edition highlighted entries that explored contemporary issues revolving around personal and political issues. Standing out among the lineup was When it Rained Malunggay Leaves, directed by Cedrick Valenzuela, which bagged major category awards such as Best Short Film, Best Screenplay, and Best Editing. The film follows Ariel (Gabby Padilla) returning home for undas to be with her mother (Tanya Gomez), exploring the trauma, healing, and motherhood in their relationship.

Another strong contender was Sunog sa Sugbo by Jon Owen Lepiten, which received the Special Jury Prize, Best Cinematography award, and Best Director for Lepiten. The film narrates the story of a teenager named Koy (Elj Seth Tababa), a breadwinner, who needs to navigate a life after being displaced due to a fire that claims their home, in pursuit of survival.

The Special Mention award went to Coding si Papa directed by Michael Angelo Pogoy, highlighting its distinct storytelling approach that captured everyday Filipino humor and tenderness, showing how family love is in our culture.

Since its launch in 2017, Sine Kabataan has become one of FDCP’s key programs in developing young talent for the film industry. By awarding excellence in categories such as screenplay, cinematography, and editing, the festival aims to encourage emerging filmmakers to hone their craft and contribute to the growth of Philippine cinema.

With this year’s winners announced, Sine Kabataan 2025 reinforces its role as a launchpad for new voices in film, bringing fresh talent to the spotlight and strengthening the country’s creative roster.
