Thailand is currently in the midst of Jia Chai—a nine-day festival about spiritual cleansing, and one of the biggest cultural and culinary showcases of Thailand.
Jia Chai, also known as the Phuket Vegetarian Festival, originated as a Taoist festival about purification and self-reflection to achieve good fortune, longevity, and prosperity. Eleven simultaneous festivals are happening in the country, organized by the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), that give every visitor the chance to experience authentic Thai culture.
The festivals also involve a procession of Chinese deities (Iew Keong Ritual) to bless people around Phuket, traditional practices that show spiritual purification (Goh Huy’ Ritual – Fire Walking Ceremony), warding of bad luck (Goh Haan ritual – Fortune-Warding Ceremony), and a wide variety of tasty vegetarian food. Recently, the festival was dubbed a UNESCO National Intangible Cultural Heritage and won the global World Festival and Event City 2024 award by the International Festivals & Events Association (IFEA).
Despite its religious beginnings, it has become a way to express Phuket’s unique culture and cuisine through its unique rituals and food offerings. Vegetarian stalls line the streets, while sacred rituals and street processions showcase this traditional event.
If you’re in Thailand, don’t miss out on this opportunity to join the festivities in Phuket until October 29!
