On the ninth spot is Krakakoa Single Origin 75% Saludengen Sulawesi from Indonesia. The use of the term single origin means the cacao beans are ethically sourced and can be traced back to their point of origin. Krakakoa ensures this by making its goal to organically grow and source from small farms that practice sustainable farming methods. After all, Indonesia is the world’s third largest producer of cocoa beans. Because of such practices in farming, the taste of Krakakao is deep and layered. You can taste molasses, dates, raisins, and rye bread with hints of clove and black pepper if you like richness in your chocolate.

Last but not least, at the 98th spot is Vietnam’s Marou Tien Giang 80% chocolate. Marou Faiseurs de Chocolat is also one of the pioneers of bean-to-bar enterprises around Asia. The cacao beans they use originate from Ba Ria Province in Vietnam is best known for its seaports and cultural significance in Vietnam’s dark history. In spite of that, they have expanded, and the chocolates that are part of the list are made from Trinitario cocoa beans grown in Cho Gao co-op in the Mekong Delta. The beans here have been cultivated since the 1990s, imbuing Tien Giang with quality and tradition that have spicy and fruity notes.

This just goes to show the variety in high quality chocolates, especially in Southeast Asia. For the full list of chocolates, visit the TasteAtlas website here.
