Despite the shutdown of Singaporean film landmarks like The Projector and Filmgrade Cineplexes, Golden Village surges ahead, officially opening their 17th outlet in Downtown East.
Golden Village is one of the leading cinema operators in the country. The company was founded in 1992, and in the last 3 decades, they have built 16 cinemas and 125 screens to suit the viewing experience of local cinephiles.
This November marks a new milestone for Golden Village, as they opened their 17th cinema—an all-new multiplex at Pasir Ris, Downtown East, consisting of a 980-seater space with 6 halls. The establishment was formerly home to Cathary Cineplexes’ Downtown East location, but due to financial difficulties and unsuccessful negotiations with creditors, the local cinema chain ceased operations earlier this year
While the country is still seeing a worrying trend of cinemas closing down, the opening of a new Golden Village multiplex shows that the demand for local film spaces still exists, albeit significantly reduced with the rise of streaming and the surge of ticket prices.
“With GV Downtown East, we’re excited to offer a new space for families, friends and communities in the east to connect, relax and enjoy world-class entertainment right in their neighbourhood,” shared Clara Cheo, chief executive of Golden Village Multiplex, in a press statement.
To celebrate the outlet’s opening, Golden Village will be having special promotions, including giveaways of movie tickets, and all-day student and senior rates.
