Singaporean Gundam fans, rejoice! The first permanent hub for the genre-defining mecha franchise is now open to the public.
Known for its action-packed mecha battles and its unflinching depiction of war, Gundam first debuted in 1979 with the anime Mobile Suit: Gundam. While initially garnering low ratings, the series gained popularity with the introduction of Gunpla DIY model kits, and has been at the forefront of the mecha genre ever since.
The franchise has since expanded to film, manga, novels, with the Gundam Base—the official merch store for all things Gundam—letting fans grab their merchandise and limited edition country-exclusive items in-store.
Its first branch in Singapore has recently opened at the Jewel Changi Airport, with a 1.8 meter-tall RX-78 statue greeting visitors at the entrance. Fans can also experience mecha figurines taking you through Gundam’s history, showcases of Gunpla model kits featuring 5 main grades, and a cozy workshop area where visitors can assemble newly-bought Gunpla kits. Aside from that, there will be scheduled free workshops on the weekends where participants can try building their own Gunpla builds.
Visit the Gundam Base Singapore’s Instagram for more information and catch the Gundam fever at Jewel Changi Airport.
