Starting as a fishing village in ancient times, Singapore is now known as one of the bustling ports in Southeast Asia! Looking back on its maritime history, the city-state is celebrating Singapore Heritage Fest this May!
Before it became modern-day Singapore, the island was known as Temasek or “Sea Town.” By the 14th century it became part of the maritime Silk Road—a trading route that turned Southeast Asian port settlements into major nodes of trading. And during 19th century, its maritime industry boomed as goods like tin, rubber, and spices passed through its ports. As the industry declined during World War II, Singaporeans began to push for the rebuilding of its maritime strength, and at present, Singapore is now home to one of the world’s busiest ports, handling over 37 million containers annually.
The Singapore Heritage Fest looks back on this maritime history through cultural performances, scenic water and land tours, guided trails, workshops and exhibitions scattered around the country. The festival’s highlight is the interactive exhibition by HOMEGROUND @ ACM Green which includes themed-programs and a central exhibition that brings Singapore’s living maritime traditions to life.
