With this year’s awards season coming to a conclusion, three movies from Warner Bros. dominate this awards season. “Joker” by Todd Philipps, “Richard Jewell” by Clint Eastwood and “Just Mercy” by Destin Daniel all garner numerous awards and nominations from different award giving bodies.
Joker alone received a whopping of 11 nominations from the Academy Awards, the greatest number of nominations a film got this year! It had already won Best actor for Joaquin Phoenix and Best Original score for the composer Hildur Guðnadóttir in the recent Golden Globe Awards including Best Picture at the Venice Film Festival. To date Joker has garnered 40 awards, and still counting!
Richard Jewell, the film by Clint Eastwood that was based on the events in Richard Jewell’s life where his heroic actions during the 1996 Atlanta Games bombing later turned into horrible nightmare as the FBI pinned him as the primary suspect. Paul Walter Hauser was awarded for his work in the film with Breakthrough Performance Award by the National Board of Review and Kathy Bates as the Best Supporting Actress. Kathy Bates also snagged an Oscar nomination for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role for her performance as Bobi Jewell, the mother of Richard Jewell. Honored by the National Board of Review as one of the ‘Ten Best of 2019’ and declared by the American Film Institute as Film of the Year Richard Jewell is truly one of the most remarkable films of this season.
Contending for six NAACP Awards, Just Mercy, is nominated for Outstanding Motion Picture, Outstanding Ensemble, Outstanding Actor (Michael B. Jordan), Outstanding Supporting Actor (Foxx), Outstanding Breakthrough Performance (Rob Morgan) and Outstanding Writing. The film was also honored by the National Board of Reviews with the Freedom of Expression Award while the African-American Film Critics Association (AAFCA) and a Best Supporting Actor prize for Jamie Foxx. He also scored a nomination for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role in the upcoming Screen Actors Guild Awards 2020.
Just Mercy also previously won the Audience Choice Award and Best Feature Film for director Destin Daniel Cretton at the St. Louis International Film Festival.
Richard Jewell premiered in Philippines and Singapore last January 9 and 15 respectively. Just Mercy premiered in Indonesia last January 8 and premiered in Philippine cinemas on January 22 and in Singaporean cinemas this February 20.
