It was truly a night to remember as Olivia Rodrigo’s concert film SOUR Prom recently premiered on the artist’s official YouTube channel.
Dressed in a gorgeous blue dress and her favorite Doctor Martens boots, the singer took us to her own version of prom that encompassed everything it means to be a teenager today, while performing songs from her debut album SOUR.
Olivia Rodrigo, known for her roles in Disney’s Bizaardvark and High School Musical : The Musical the Series, became famous overnight upon the release of her first single Driver’s License in January. The hit song was followed by others that shared in its success, such as Deja Vu and Good 4 U, before she finally released her first album in May. SOUR included new songs that showcased the different shades of teenage life and heartache—the anger, vulnerability, sadness, insecurity and regret—and immediately claimed the top spot in charts across the country, with its success still going strong today as it holds the number one spot on Billboard’s 200 for its third week.
The singer announced the premiere of the concert film on her Instagram on June 24, writing that “since I never got to go to my prom, I wanted to throw a little prom party with my fave ppl (you guys obvs).” Some lucky fans even got to experience being invited to the livestream personally as the artist visited their houses holding a massive sign that read “Prom would be brutal without you”.
After only one week since its premiere, SOUR Prom has recorded more than 13M views on Youtube. Though not the first of its kind, with predecessors of similar concepts such as Machine Gun Kelly’s directorial debut Downfalls High and Blackpink’s THE SHOW, Rodrigo still gifts fans with the magical experience of her unique rendition of prom night as a journey through the complicated and powerful emotions in each of her songs.
