Fifteen (15) years – this is how long the journey of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson experienced before he can finally release the long-awaited DC superhero flick, “Black Adam”. Is it worth the wait? In this High Five movie review, we feature the latest superhero offering of DC and Warner Bros. Discovery, the live-action adaptation of the anti-hero “Black Adam”.
The Raging Action and Explosions!
“Black Adam” follows the story of Teth Adam (Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson) and his journey to becoming Kahndaq’s protector by using his type of justice.
For action lovers, this movie never disappoints. Viewers will enjoy the jampacked action sequences and explosions (a lot of explosions) from start to finish! The film also beautifully executed the live-action adaptation of the superpowers of our superheroes.
The New Heroes
“Black Adam” not only introduces Teth Adam, but it also shows us the team-up of Hawkman (Aldis Hodge), Doctor Fate (Pierce Brosnan), Cyclone (Quintessa Swindell), and Atom Smasher (Noah Centineo) as the Justice Society of America or the JSA.
The introduction to the other heroes is a bit rushed but that is understandable as this film is not about them. Good thing, they were integrated into the story to play an important role and not just a useless plot device.
The Right Level of Seriousness and Humor
DC movies in the past were labeled as too serious and too dark but this time, “Black Adam” is different, it has the right balance of seriousness and comedy. Teth Adam is a serious figure but the dialogue between all the characters in the film has just the right number of jokes. They know when to be serious and when to be funny. The film is not light but not too dark as well!
The Super Surprises
The film features a lot of references to other DC properties and a lot of cameos from other DC characters who already appeared in past films. Just a reminder, do not miss the mid-credits scene! We are excited for the future of “Black Adam” and the new era of the DC Extended Universe (DCEU)!
Now, is it worth the wait? For us here in SEA Wave, it is surely a YES and we gave it 4 out of 5 waves! “Black Adam” totally delivers the perfect origin story for the titular anti-hero, and we hope we receive a sequel for the teased match-up at the end!
DC and Warner Bros. Discovery’s “Black Adam” is now showing in Southeast Asian cinemas.
