‘West Side Story,” the modern representation of Romeo and Juliet, is coming to Thailand this October 5-8 for six shows to celebrate Bangkok’s 25th International Festival of Dance and Music.

The festival began in 1999 for the 6th cycle of birth of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej. To this day, it’s celebrated annually for five to six weeks between September and October, making it the only yearly event that gets significant and constant publicity in Thailand.

The audience is in for a treat when they watch ‘West Side Story’ since the original sets from the New York production to Thailand and the original choreography of Jerome Robbie, legendary dancer and director, will be performed by a troupe of American actors.

The performance also celebrates the 90th anniversary of Thai-US relations. Hence, aside from the play, there would be an outreach program and masterclass on voice and dance on October 3 at International School Bangkok.

This year, the international festival is set from September 2 to October 22, an eight-week celebration at the Thailand Cultural Center. You can also enjoy other productions during the festival, from operas to plays and dance performances.

Some notable ones are dance performances like Swan Lake by Les Ballets de Monte Carlo and Flamenco. There’s also a night of Beethoven with the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra and the Yue opera entitled, ‘Dream of The Red Chamber,’ a creative recounting of China’s classic novel.
