A new generation of The Sims is in development and it will be free to play! Sims fans better watch out since the developers are talking about exciting things coming to the game.
The Sims started as a life simulation game developed by Maxis and published by EA in 2000 for the PC. The game was received positively by casual gamers and, over time, grew into a household staple because of its interactive and creative gameplay. Thus, the creators continued to develop many versions of the game, with dozens of sequels, spin-offs and expansion packs, growing it into the franchise we all know and love today. As of 2017, The Sims holds the Guiness World Record for “Most Expansion Packs for a Videogame Series” and is considered one of the best-selling video game franchises of all time.
Liyndsay Pearson, VP Franchise Creative for The Sims, shares, “We’re always looking for ways to bring The Sims to more players and keep that charming character and creation center at the heart of what we make. What must we preserve to make this still a Sims game and what can we do in this game that we couldn’t do before.”
The new Sims game dubbed Project Rene is still in the early stages of development, and will focus on both solo and multiplayer gameplay.
“With Project Rene, we want to do things from the start that The Sims hasn’t ever done and try to do familiar things in a new way. Project Rene will be a new way to play The Sims,” Pearson continued.
Pearson also stated that The Sims will be more accessible to everyone who wants to join, “We want to make it super easy for your friends to come and join you. We intend for Project Rene to be free to download, and that means that when it’s ready and fully open to our players, you’ll be able to join and play and explore Project Rene without a subscription.”
She also stated that compared to The Sims 4, Project Rene will not start with everything players had in the previous game, but fans should rest assured that EA will add regular updates, new content and packs over time to populate the game and give players an enjoyable experience.
The upcoming Project Rene is still in development, but watch out for further updates from EA and the Sims team.
In the meantime, The Sims 4 is free to download here.
