Following the success of Barbie (2023) which earned $1.14 billion at the worldwide box office, Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling are teaming up once again for the prequel to Warner Bros.’ famous Ocean’s film franchise.
The Ocean’s film series is composed of a series of movies inspired by the 1960s film Ocean’s 11. The plot follows the charismatic, fictional character Danny Ocean as he is released from prison and enacts another heist at a casino accompanied by his crew. The 1960s version had Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr., and Dean Martin as the leads while the most recent franchise had a star-studded cast including George Clooney, Brad Pitt, and Matt Damon. The Oceans trilogy also had an all-female spin-off in 2018 called Ocean’s 8 composed of Sandra Bullock (playing Danny’s sister, Debbie Ocean), Cate Blanchet, and Anne Hathaway.
“I can’t really say much, but I think we’re just trying to do right by the franchise. I’m excited for people to experience it when it’s ready,” said producer Josey McNamara in an interview with GamesRadar. When asked about the pairing of Robbie and Gosling, McNamara said, “They’re wonderful together. The more projects even outside of that we can have them do would be amazing.” McNamara, who has produced his fair share of films starring Robbie such as Terminal (2018) and Dreamland (2019), was also an executive producer of Barbie (2023) and hopes this can be the start of more collaborations between the two lead actors.
Jay Roach, best known as the director of the Austin Powers film series and most recently Bombshell (2019), is also joining the production, which is said to be set in 1960s Monte Carlo, an infamous location for gambling and decadence. More details to come since the project is still being kept under wraps.
