National Geographic was one of the most iconic TV channels known around the world – its unique presentation of nature, science and culture through popular documentaries garnered millions of viewers around the world. Not only was National Geographic a network that showcased different fascinating facets of human life and nature, it also served as a vehicle of education for its viewers and inspired them to be curious about the world around them.

As of October 2023, the National Geographic channel, along with its sister channels Baby TV, National Geographic Wild, Star Chinese Movies, Star Chinese Channel and Fox channels bid farewell to Southeast Asian televisions.

The move was not unexpected, since Disney announced the end of broadcasts last June and began pulling television channels from broadcast as early as 2020 in an effort to bolster their direct-to-video streaming service with Disney+. Other Disney channels that were terminated in Southeast Asia include the Fox group of channels, Star Movies and Star Sports, Nat Geo People, SCM Legend, and even Disney and Disney Jr.

While the termination of TV channels does not mean the end of our favorite shows, this massive shake-up could signal the end of an era for broadcast television.

National Geographic viewers from Southeast Asia can still catch their favorite shows on Disney+ alongside shows and movies from other Disney titles like Star Wars, Pixar and Marvel.
