It’s widely known that movie studios bring out the big guns for the holidays, and this year is no exception. This Christmas season, we are getting an amazing line-up of films as gifts from our favorite filmmakers – from heartwarming stories to action-packed adventures that will make for an exciting viewing experience.
To guide you in selecting which films to get hyped about, SEA Wave shares High Five movies that you can look forward to this December.
Wonka
Watching Wonka is the perfect way to start the holidays on a whimsical note. The film follows the story of a young Willy Wonka (Timothée Chalamet) and how his curiosity led him to become the “world’s greatest inventor, magician, and chocolate-maker” that we know today. Aside from expanding on the origins of popular character Willy Wonka, the film is also a musical fantasy, which adds a layer of playfulness that fits flawlessly with the season.
Directed by Paul King and co-written by King and Simon Farnaby, Wonka is now showing in various Southeast Asian countries.
Journey to Bethlehem
Journey to Bethlehem is a holiday musical drama film telling the journey of Mary and Joseph as they make their way to Bethlehem in anticipation of the birth of their son.
This musical is a joyous film with a modernized twist – a classic story filled with Christmas melodies and modern pop songs to share the spirit of the season. The plot also focuses on the love story between the couple and the challenges they face against a tyrant king trying to get in their way as they follow their path of faith.
This heartwarming holiday tale has begun screening in Southeast Asian cinemas so catch it at a theater near you. It is also available on Prime Video for you to enjoy with family and friends at home.
Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget
An epic comeback awaits as Ginger, Rocky, and the whole flock return in Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget. A sequel to the iconic stop-motion animation Chicken Run (2000), the film will continue the story of Ginger and Rocky, now with their daughter Molly, after breaking out of the prison-like farm where they were held captive. The flock will now attempt to break into a sanctuary to find paradise and live free with chickenkind, as a new threat looms over the horizon.
This film will be available to stream on Netflix starting December 15.
Rebel Moon
Diverging from family films, this season also offers action-packed movies for a more mature audience. Rebel Moon Part One: A Child of Fire is the highly anticipated first part of Zack Snyder’s space opera. The story follows Kora (Sofia Boutella), a mysterious outlaw tasked to gather a team of warriors to fight against the tyrannical leadership of Regent Balisarius (Fra Fee). The film will show an epic battle between the corrupt government of the Motherworld and rebel forces taking a stand for their people.
Netflix recently announced that Rebel Moon will be available for early streaming on Netflix starting December 21.
Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom
Last on our list is the much-awaited return to Atlantis! Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom is a sequel to Aquaman (2018) and the final film set in the DC Extended Universe. Aquaman (Jason Momoa) reconnects with his brother, the former king of Atlantis Orm/Ocean Master (Patrick Wilson), as they embark on a journey to protect their kingdom from the cursed Black Trident.
With director James Wan’s promise of a bigger and more vibrant Atlantis, fans are excited to see this aquatic adventure on the big screen. Catch it in cinemas starting December 20.
