When it comes to nightmarish ghouls and heart racing jumpscares, the Resident Evil games have the technique in the bag. What if we tell you that Southeast Asia has its own version of it from the Philippines? Check out Kubo ng Lagim or The Dreaded Hut.
This single-player game is set after a flood that ravages Sitio Malig. As the flood subsides, our protagonist Ramon “Monching” Vergara embarks on a search for his sister who has gone missing. However, Ramon soon realizes that though the natural disaster may have passed, it has left behind something much more sinister. As night falls on the village, the line between the living and the damned fades. As Ramon, players have to look for clues throughout the nightmare-fueled setting that takes elements straight from Philippine mythology.
The game was created by Gnaw Paw Studios, a team made up of dedicated developers, artists, and designers behind independent games like the apocalyptic racer Auto Auto and platformer Platboarder. The Dreaded Hut is currently available on Steam for those interested to see what a small and passionate team can do for the local gaming industry. Reviews are mostly positive, with props to the voice acting, monster designs, and lore, so try it out and let us know your thoughts about it in the comments!
