Aside from Seri Negara, another historical site in Kuala Lumpur is opening its doors to the public: the Bangunan Sultan Abdul Samad.
The structure closed its doors last year for restoration and conservation as part of the first phase of Khazanah Nasional Bhd’s Dana Warisan initiative—a national program breathing new life into Malaysia’s historic locations. Like Seri Negara, it originally functioned as a housing complex for British colonial administration offices, and by 1974, it was named after Sultan Abdul Samad, the ruler of Selangor at the time of construction. The structure houses the Old Post Office (Pejabat Pos Lama), the former Kuala Lumpur High Court City Theatre (Panggung Bandaraya), the former FMS Survey Office, and the National Textile Museum.
The Bangunan Sultan Abdul Samad reopened earlier this February, highlighting the Kuala Lumpur City Gallery, where interactive displays and exhibits show the history of the country’s capital and the building itself. There are also retail and craft spaces featuring artisan workshops and local merchandise, with event halls large enough to accommodate various types of functions.
