As the Philippines hosts the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in 2026, the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) brings the region’s creative communities together through “Seas Unbroken,” a cinematic music video commissioned to tell a collective story of
Southeast Asia through the eyes of its people.

Produced by Voyage Film Studios, the project celebrates the region’s diversity and shared experiences through the perspectives of local filmmakers. Rather than focusing on national landmarks and tourist destinations, “Seas Unbroken” turns its lens toward everyday life: livelihoods
sustained by the sea, families gathering around meals, bustling urban communities, and children carrying traditions into the future.

The film highlights how arts and culture can deepen understanding among nations, allowing artists to represent their own communities while contributing to a broader regional narrative. By bringing together filmmakers, creatives, and production teams from all 11 ASEAN member
states, the project demonstrates how collaboration can bridge cultural differences without diminishing individual identities

Directed and edited by Chuck Gutierrez, produced by Baby Ruth Villarama of Voyage Film Studios, featuring original music composed, written, and arranged by Von De Guzmán and sung by Sofronio Vasquez, “Seas Unbroken” weaves distinct national perspectives into a unified
cinematic experience.

For Gutierrez, the challenge was to bring these perspectives together while preserving what makes each country unique.

“Our seas may separate our shores, but they also connect our stories. We didn’t want to create a travelogue of Southeast Asia. We wanted to tell a human story. In the editing room, we discovered that despite our differences, the rhythms of our everyday lives are remarkably
connected. The challenge was bringing these perspectives together without losing what makes each country unique,” Gutierrez said.

Behind the production was a network of professional relationships cultivated among Southeast Asian filmmakers over the years. Voyage Film Studios helped assemble the regional teams, bringing together longtime collaborators and new creative partners, many of whom were
working with one another for the first time.

For Villarama, the project reflects how these relationships can evolve into meaningful creative partnerships.

“Everything we’ve been through as filmmakers, the challenges, friendships, and networks we’ve built across Southeast Asia for more than a decade, led us here. Many of our collaborators were people we were working with for the first time, yet everyone brought something deeply authentic to the project. It became alive, almost as though the film was breathing on its own,” Villarama said.

The film’s original song further unites its images through a shared emotional journey. De Guzmán’s music and lyrics draw on the region’s histories, cultures, and aspirations, conveying how solidarity can coexist with distinct national identities.

“With Seas Unbroken, I wanted to capture how our different histories, cultures, and identities are connected by the same seas and a shared hope for peace and prosperity. Through music and lyrics, we celebrate the strength of each nation and the greater possibilities we create together. My hope is that the song reflects not only who we are as Southeast Asians, but who we can become together,” De Guzmán said.

The project comes at a significant moment for ASEAN, which welcomed Timor-Leste as its 11th member in 2025. As the regional bloc continues to strengthen cooperation and shape its future, “Seas Unbroken” offers a cultural perspective on regional identity, complementing diplomacy, trade, and political partnerships with stories rooted in the everyday lives of Southeast Asians.

For the CCP, commissioning the film forms part of the Philippine arts and cultural sector’s contribution to the country’s ASEAN 2026 hosting. Through this initiative, artists can participate in regional engagement by creating spaces for cultural exchange, representing their communities, and sharing stories that transcend boundaries.
