Our first official look at Shin Kamen Rider is here, preparing us for the return of the Japanese pop-culture icon.

A reboot of the original 1971 Kamen Rider series, the movie has been in development for six years and was further delayed because of the pandemic. It was finally announced in a press conference last April during the 50th anniversary of the franchise’s first episode.

Toei Productions recently released a teaser of the movie and announced the main cast, starring Sosuke Ikematsu as Takeshi Hongo (Kamen Rider) and Minami Hamabe as Ruriko Midorikawa. Catch the first look at Shin Kamen Rider below.

While we have to wait until March 2023 before we get to see the movie, we know it will be worth it as award-winning director Hideaki Anno will helm the project and bring a new twist to the franchise. Shin Kamen Rider expects Anno to bring his signature “Shin” take, reimagining classic tokusatsu or live action series for a modern audience, starting with his Shin Godzilla in 2016 and the upcoming Shin Ultraman which will be released this year.

The original Kamen Rider series followed Takeshi Hongo, a brilliant biochemistry student who was kidnapped by the villain named Man Spider and brought to the evil terrorist organization named Shocker that turns humans into cyborgs. With the help of a former Shocker Scientist Professor Midorikawa Takeshi broke free from the clutches of Man Spider and the evil organization Shocker, and he became the first Kamen Rider.
