Lights, Motion, and More with LEGO SMART Play!

LEGOs have been a popular hobby for both kids and adults alike. Now, the LEGO Group has announced a new innovation that will enhance the building experience—the LEGO SMART Play platform!

The interactive platform was showcased at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2026 in Las Vegas Nevada just this January. It represents one of the many significant evolutions that the LEGO System-in-Play has had since the minifigures were introduced way back in 1978.

The LEGO SMART Play includes three important features: the LEGO SMART Brick, LEGO SMART Tags and LEGO SMART Minifigures—all of which react to each other in real time as you play with them. The LEGO SMART Brick is the heart of the platform and contains a custom-made chip that’s as big as a standard LEGO stud. It also has sensors, accelerometers, light sensing and a sound sensor when attached to any of the normal bricks, the experience turns into a responsive physical play—lights and sounds are conjured by the invisible technology and gives builders a unique play experience unlike anything else.

“For over 90 years, the LEGO Group has sparked imagination and creativity in children around the globe. As the world evolves, so do we— innovating to meet the play needs of each new generation. LEGO SMART Play is the next exciting chapter in our LEGO System in Play and something we are super excited about being able to bring to the world at this scale,” said Julia Goldin, Chief Product & Marketing Officer of the LEGO Group during the showcase.

The first LEGO SMART Play set will be implemented through LEGO Group’s LEGO Star Wars Galaxy, Luke’s Red Five X-Wing building set, Darth Vader’s TIE Fighter, Throne Room Duel & A-Wing All-In-One building sets. “This milestone in our long-time collaboration with the LEGO Group adds a new dimension to this legacy, continuing to help fans express their creativity and imagination by extending the Star Wars story through play,” said Paul Gitter, Executive Vice President of Global Brand Commercialization at Disney Consumer Products.

Pre-order the LEGO SMART Play All-in-One sets starting January 9 and purchase them starting March 1 through the LEGO website.
