Spider-Man: Brand New Day is swinging toward $2 billion at the global box office, cementing its place as one of Marvel’s biggest films. But what makes this new chapter so significant for Spider-Man and the Marvel Cinematic Universe?
We’ve given everyone ample time to see it—so consider this your warning: major spoilers ahead. This is SEA Wave’s High Five Review of Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
A Brand New Direction

After going big with No Way Home, Brand New Day takes Spider-Man in a new direction, bringing him back to where he belongs: the streets of New York City. While the previous Spider-Man films were primarily set in the city, we rarely got to see Peter fully embrace his role as New York’s friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. Brand New Day finally gives us that version of the character.
But this new direction isn’t just about where Spider-Man operates. Despite featuring some of the franchise’s best action sequences, Brand New Day values emotion as much as spectacle. It explores how trauma, grief, and personal struggles shape the person behind the mask.
Tom Holland captures Peter Parker’s newfound maturity perfectly, while Brand New Day reflects that evolution and shows the full extent of what Peter lost to become Spider-Man. It’s a far cry from the wide-eyed teenager we first met nearly a decade ago.
Spider-Man’s Peak is Peter Parker’s Lowest

Peter Parker’s journey in Brand New Day is summed up by a line of dialogue from the film: “Sometimes Spider-Man has to do the hard thing, even if it breaks Peter Parker’s heart.” While Spider-Man flourishes as New York City’s beloved protector, Peter Parker is left alone, remembered by no one. This contrast captures the price of his choice in No Way Home and the responsibility that comes with being Spider-Man.
But Peter’s dilemma is no longer about balancing Spider-Man and Peter Parker—it’s about how much of himself he must give up to be Spider-Man. That question shapes his journey throughout Brand New Day, leading to some of the film’s most vulnerable and heartbreaking moments with the people dearest to him.
That emotional turmoil eventually triggers a mutation, giving him new abilities like organic webbing and heightened senses while creating challenges that hinder him as Spider-Man. Peter Parker becomes Spider-Man’s greatest obstacle, while Spider-Man becomes Peter Parker’s greatest burden. And the allies and foes he encounters along the way only deepen that conflict.
A Stacked Roster with a Few Surprises

Brand New Day marks a major feat for the MCU, bringing together Marvel characters from different franchises. While crossovers have become familiar—and sometimes criticized—in the MCU’s Spider-Man films, Brand New Day makes them feel purposeful to both Spider-Man’s mission and Peter Parker’s journey.
The same goes for its impressive lineup of villains. After facing foes connected to Tony Stark and threats from across the multiverse, Spider-Man finally takes on villains of his own. Yet despite the stacked roster, they are merely pawns in a much bigger game. From classic villains to Bruce Banner in his true Hulk form and even a top-secret character, none emerge as the true antagonist. The real threat was the government all along.
Making the Department of Damage Control the primary antagonist is an unexpected choice. It’s a shocking betrayal that shows how Brand New Day looks beyond traditional supervillains to create threats for Spider-Man. But the film still had one more surprise: a reveal that would make the biggest waves.
A Secret That Carries Its Weight

After months of anticipation and secrecy, it’s official: Sadie Sink is Jean Grey. While this was one of the film’s biggest surprises, it felt more like a long-awaited confirmation of the rumor that had been circulating since Sink was cast.
Debuting an iconic mutant like Jean Grey in a Spider-Man movie was certainly an unconventional way to introduce her to the MCU, considering how rarely the two characters cross paths in the comics. Yet Sadie Sink completely stole the show. Her relationship with Peter Parker made her inclusion feel justified, becoming one of the film’s strongest elements.
Her connection with Peter turns an unlikely pairing into a touching story about two people finding comfort in someone who understands their loneliness. Their shared struggles create a compelling dynamic that gives the film much of its emotional weight.
But Jean Grey’s MCU debut is just the tip of the iceberg. Brand New Day also introduces several concepts that could have major implications for the MCU.
Big Potatoes For The MCU

While Brand New Day is primarily Peter Parker’s story, Jean Grey’s introduction quietly sets the stage for the MCU’s potential mutant era. With the X-Men reboot still years away, Peter Parker’s universal inhibitor could provide a blueprint for suppressing mutant powers. At the same time, Damage Control’s secret experiments hint at how the government may respond to the emergence of gifted youth.
Brand New Day also brings the MCU’s street-level characters further into its cinematic fold, with the Punisher’s feature-film debut and the New Avengers’ involvement. These connections help bridge the MCU’s different corners—an important step with Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars next on the horizon.
But perhaps the biggest implication is what all of this means for Peter himself. His mutation marks a major evolution for Spider-Man, while the film’s confirmation that “Spider-Man Will Return” leaves his future wide open.
Still, that post-credit scene leaves us with one major question: will Tom Holland’s Spider-Man be the one we see next?
Brand New Day is ushering in a brand new era, not only for Spider-Man but for the Marvel Cinematic Universe as a whole. But beyond its significance to the MCU, the film is also a culmination of Peter Parker’s journey—bringing Spider-Man back to where he belongs.
SEA Wave rates Spider-Man: Brand New Day 4 out of 5 waves.
